This print was printed 1927. One of three nude studies in print by Yoshida. "Shusaku" and "Jizuri" red seal on the left margin. Title "Study of Nude" and signature "Hiroshi Yoshida" by hand in pencil on the bottom margin. Brush signature "Yoshida" with red "Hiroshi" seal at lower left. Yoshida's prints are highly collectible prints, however now extremely hard to find. Very fine impression and colors. Yoshida tried to use shading and making sure to look three dimensional. This print shows the influence of the western art world pressing into the distinct style of Japanese art. Very interesting master piece. "Jizuri" seal on Yoshida Hiroshi prints is the notation he used to signify that the block was carved and printed under his supervision and met his quality requirement. It is only used on lifetime prints.

The picture shows two fine views of Edo in Hiroshige's times Mt. Fuji as seen from the hilly Surugacho and Echigoya Draper Shop at Surugacho. These two were the favorite subjects of Hokusai. Hiroshige and other ukiyo-e painters.
The picture of Mt. Fuji towering above the clouds painted in bluish purple, yellow, dark blue, light crimson colors is splendid indeed if a little too decorative.
Echigoya started a business here in 1683 and immediately won general popularity in Edo. It's motto "cash payment and reasonable prices" appealed to the people. Credit sale payable only twice a year in July and December was the common practice at the time.

Tomoe no Shutsujin (Tomoe Gozen, the Female Warrior)
The print was produced as a kuchie frontispiece for a novel 巴の出陣 "Tomoe no Shutsujin" in a literary magazine titled Bungei Kurabu magazine, Vol 10, No.5 in 1904. Tomoe Gozen (1157–1247) was a late twelfth-century female samurai warrior, known for her bravery and strength. She is believed to have fought in and survived the Genpei War (1180–1185). She was also the concubine of Minamoto no Yoshinaka.
"Tomoe was especially beautiful, with white skin, long hair, and charming features. She was also a remarkably strong archer, and as a swordswoman she was a warrior worth a thousand, ready to confront a demon or a god, mounted or on foot. She handled unbroken horses with superb skill; she rode unscathed down perilous descents. Whenever a battle was imminent, Yoshinaka sent her out as his first captain, equipped with strong armor, an oversized sword, and a mighty bow; and she performed more deeds of valor than any of his other warriors." From -The Tale of the Heike -
Artist: Gekko Ogata (1859-1920)

This beautiful woodblock print "Tonami, Yashikirin no aruie (A House with windbreak trees at Tonami) is by Koichi Maeda. Absolutely beautiful colors and contrast. Maeda is very interested in "Yashiki-rin" (Windbreak trees). He has created some woodblock prints with this particular subject. Yashiki-rin (windbreak trees) around a home can reduce the cost of heating and cooling and save energy. Maeda saw different types of Yashiki-rin (Windbreak trees) in several places. Each place has a different style, depending on the weather, including the amount of snow and winds that they encounter. Maeda tries to show the difference of Japanese Yashiki-rin in his prints. Obtaining Yashiki-rin near households is a very traditional Japanese way, under the Japanese culture with wisdom and experience. Its rarity is one of the many beautiful aspects of Yashiki-rin. I truly admire his passion for incorporating many aspects of the Japanese culture in his woodblock prints.

This beautiful woodblock print "Tsukuba Yashiki-rin no aru ie" (A House with windbreak trees at Tsukuba) is by Koichi Maeda. This print is really bright and lively, full of light and wonderful colors with precision and details. Maeda is very interested in "Yashiki-rin" (Windbreak trees). I truly admire his passion for incorporating many aspects of Japanese culture in his woodblock prints.
